One of the larger Dutch warships of the Second Anglo-Dutch War, the Witte Olifant (‘White Elephant’) was built by the Amsterdam Admiralty, and carried her 82 guns on three decks. Engraving by Willem van de Velde the Elder.

With the hull completed the ship was decked over, the deck timbers resting on transverse beams, which in turn rested on wooden knees that resembled the brackets of a modern shelf. Typically, the area below the lowest deck or orlop deck became the hold, where the ship’s ballast and stores were kept, and the rear of this deck – below the quarterdeck – became the cockpit, used as a surgery ward during an action. Beneath it lay the magazine, sited well below the waterline. Above the orlop were the gun decks, the number depending on the size of the ship. Above these was the upper deck, which could be completely planked over, or might be open in the waist, creating a spar deck, that allowed easy ventilation of the gun deck below.
